Even modest amounts of physical exercises can substantially reduce a person’s chances of dying of  heart disease, cancer or other causes. So suggests a study done by doctors at the Institute of aerobics Research in Dallas, Texas.
As reported in the Journal of American Medical Association, researchers tested the physical fitness of more than 13,000 healthy men and women, and followed them for an average of eight years. Fitness was measured by performance on a treadmill rather than relying on verbal reports of exercises.
The subject were then grouped into five categories, from least to most fit. The least-fit group had death rates more than three times that of the most fit. But the biggest health gain came from just getting out of the least-fit category.
“This is an important message for people to understand,” says Carl Caspersen of the center of Disease Control in Atlanta. “You don’t have to be a marathon runner. Walking briskly for a half  hour  several days a week can reduce the risk of health problems dramatically.’

TORAJAN FEAST FOR THE DEAD

The Torajans are perhaps best known for their elaborate colourful feast for the dead offering to ensure that the soul of the dead may pass to the after world in a manner appropriate to the status they enjoyed in this world.
This feast cost a lot of money because the kin groups will often save and work for many years to prepare a suitable elaborate funeral. Visitors should be sure to contribute food, cigarettes, soap or money to assist the family.

In the meantime, the deceased is regarded as merely sick and the corpse is kept in the “tongkonan” (a series of houses arranged in circular row around an open field), where he is fed and visited as if he were still alive. The corpse is first ritually cleansed and dressed in a fine weaving and made to sit up. After some days, it is wrapped in specially woven fabric and lain in a westward facing position.
When enough goods have been set aside to send the soul off, the funeral ceremonies are performed in two stages over a period of about a week presided over by a “tomabalu” (death specialist). Buffaloes and pigs are first slaughtered and offerings of betel nuts, fruits and “tuak” (palm wine) are made. The corpse is then moved to face north and is now officially dead.                 Buying, selling, market research, transportation, storage, advertising – these are all part of the complex area of business movement of goods and services from the manufacturer to customer in order to satisfy the customer and to achieve the company’s objectives. Marketing can be divided into four main elements that are popularly known as the four P’s; product, price, place, and promotion. Each one plays a vital role in the success or failure of the marketing operation.
The product element of marketing refers to the goods or services that a company wants to sell. This often involves research and development (R and D) of a new product, research of the potential market, testing of the product to ensure quality, and then introduction to the market.
A company next considers the price to charge for its product. There are three pricing options the company may take : above, with, or below the prices that its competitors are charging. For example, if the average price of a pair of women’s leather shoes is $ 27, the company that charges $23 has priced below the market; a company that charges $ 27 has priced with the market; and a company that charges $ 33 has priced above the market. Most company price with the market and sell their goods or services for average prices established by major producers in industry. The producers who establish these prices are known as price leaders.
The third element of marketing process – placement – involves getting the product to the customer. This takes place trough the channels of distribution. A common channel of distribution is : manufacturer – wholesaler – retailer – customer.
Wholesalers generally sell large quantities of  product to retailers, and retailers usually sell smaller quantities to customer.
Finally, communication about the product takes place between the buyer and the seller. This communication between the buyer and the seller is known as promotion. There are two major ways how promotion occurs : through personal selling, as in the department store, and through advertising, as in the newspaper or magazines.
The four elements of marketing – product, price, placement, and promotion – work together to develop a successful marketing operation that satisfy customers and achieves the company’s objectives.

AIR POLLUTION

Everyday both industrial and domestic chimneys emit vast amounts of dirt and harmful gases. The exhaust fumes from thousands of car engines add to this huge volume of filth.
Sulfur dioxide, produce mainly by the burning of coal and oil, combined with the moisture of the air to form sulfuric acid. This eats away stone, brick, and even metal. Doctors reason that if it can do this, it must damage the lungs of people who breathe it, especially over a period of many years.
Usually the effects of air pollution are not instantly noticeable. Occasionally, though, there have been catastrophic ”smogs”. (The word smog is a combination of smoke and fog). One of these occurred in the town of Donora, and Pennsylvania, in the U.S.A. The valley in which the town lies traps the smoke and fumes from the steelworks and chemical plants that fill it. One day, in October 1948, unusual weather conditions prevented the smog from lifting by the afternoon, as it normally did. Instead, it hung over the town for three days. By the end of the third day, nearly 6000 people were ill. More than 60 % of those are aged 65 on over were seriously ill, 20 people died. At last a heavy rain shower clear the smog.
One of the chief causes of air pollution in many cities is the internal combustion engine. Cars, lorries, and buses give out the gas called carbon monoxide, which in high concentrations can kill a person in a confined space. Cars also throw into the air fine particle of rubber and asphalt from their tires and the road, and particles of asbestos from their brake-linings. These can cause damage to the lungs when breathed in.
Another source of pollution is the nuclear power station which produce a great amount of poisonous radio-active waste. This waste must be sealed up and buried beneath the ground of seabed so carefully that there is no danger of leakage. Some scientists are worried that we are not being careful enough with nuclear waste. It may not all be buried safely. Also they fear there may be a serious accident at a nuclear power station, releasing deadly radiation into the air.

Water is an important forest product. Forest soils are giant sponges. They soak up rain, so that it seeps slowly into the ground and stays there. Many towns and cities depend on these forest reservoirs.
Shaded from the sun and sheltered from drying winds, forest streams flow steadily even in dry weather. But when trees are cut the soil is exposed and is washed or blown away. Then rain runs off quickly, causing erosion and floods.
Wildlife is another important forest source. The forest provides food and shelter for a large and varied population of birds and animals. Million of people look to the forest as places of recreation. hiking, picnicking, sightseeing, fishing, hunting, camping, swimming, and other outdoor activities are becoming more popular each year.

Scientists and doctors say that about 34 million Americans are too fat. Why is this? One cause is the kind of food Americans eat. Many Americans like ’fast food’. These foods (such as hamburgers and ice cream) often have fattening things in them. Another cause is the way Americans eat. They often eat little snacks between regular meals. These extra foods add extra fat on the body. A third cause is not enough exercise. Americans like driving everywhere, instead of walking. They often have machines to do a lot of the work. Some Americans are also too heavy because of health problems. But for most of those 34 million Americans, the problem is the American lifestyle.

Nuclear energy is the energy contained in the nucleus, or centre, of an atom. It is the powerful form of energy that exists. Only in this century have scientists learned how to obtain nuclear energy. They have put it to constructive uses, as in electric power stations. They have also put it to destructive uses, as in the atomic bomb and the hydrogen bomb.
Sometimes nuclear energy is called atomic energy because it is obtained from atoms. This is not a good choice of words. Other forms of energy can also be obtained from atoms. For example, chemical energy, also, comes from atoms. But it comes from reactions outside the atomic nuclei. Nuclei is the plural of nucleus. Chemical energy is released when coal, oil, gas other fuels are burned.
Anatomic-bomb explosion shows how powerful nuclear energy is. You have probably read of nuclear explosions described in terms of megatons, or million of tons of TNT. You may have known that TNT is the abbreviation of trinitrotoluene. It means a high explosive.
The breakdown, or fission, or uranium atoms supplies about 2 percent of the word’s energy requirements. Fission release tremendous amount of heat, which can be used to make steam to drive electric generators.
Early supporters of nuclear power believed that it would provide plenty of energy at low cost. But many problems have developed. The cost of building nuclear power plants has soared. There is great public concern about the possibility of a spread of radiation following an accident in a nuclear plant. As yet there is also no sure, safe way to dispose of the burned out fuel, which is radioactive. And the supply of uranium on the earth, like the supply of fossil fuels, is limited.

What is the nuclear energy obtained from?
Electricity
Atom
Steam
Coal
Oil

Working a long hours at a computer can cause eyestrain. A letter to the New England Journal of Medicine provides one explanation for the problem.
Japanese researchers studied some 50 office workers who spent an average of three hours a day at a computer. Since blinking keeps eyes moist – thus reducing strain – the researchers counted blinking rates under different condition. The workers averaged 22 blinks a minute when relaxed, ten blinks a minute while reading a book and just seven a minute while reading text on a computer screen. The computer workers also kept their eyes open wider, which meant moisture evaporated more quickly.
If you work at a computer screen, close your eyes periodically. That spreads a tear film and rests your eyes. And remember to blink more often.

THE SUN AS A SOURCE OF ENERGY

As the supplies of fossil fuels – coal, oil and gas-are running out, scientists have been working hard trying to find ways of obtaining other kinds of fuel. They have succeeded in finding one that is very efficient : nuclear fuel. However, the ores which produce this kind of energy, e.g. uranium ores, will eventually run out too. Fortunately, a source of abundant energy, which is virtually inexhaustible-sunlight-has been waiting for the scientists.
The sun sends out energy equal to that produced by 10.000 million tons of coal every second, of which the earth receives only one two-billionth part. It is estimated that the energy which the falls on one square metre of the earth’s surface per second can be used to keel about seven 100-watt lamps burning. The sun’s energy is really abundant, but only a limited amount has so far been used by man.
The sun can also be used as a source of fuel for power plants. Such power plants are still in the experimental stages. However, it is hoped that they will lead the way to a wider use of solar energy to run machines.
Solar energy can be used in telephone communications, space technology, and farming. Solar batteries have been in experimental use for a number of years to power instruments used in space vehicles. Scientists have also succeeded in developing solar pumps that can raise water for irrigation.
The sun seems to be an ideal source of energy for a great many uses. Yet to change the abundant sunlight into energy is a different matter. The instruments needed to catch the sun’s energy are still very expensive. However, once man succeeds in catching even a small part of that energy, nobody would worry about running out of fossil fuels or uranium ores.
It lies in the hands of the scientists to make this dream come true.

There are two types of electric current. The first is AC which stands for Alternating Current, and the second is Direct Current or DC. AC is more widely used then DC, because it is easier to generate and to transmit.
When huge quantities of electric energy are distributed to houses, shops and factories they take a long distance. By the time they reach their destination, their voltages must be changed. High voltages are too dangerous for homes and factories.
An up and down transformer is used to regulate the voltages. High voltages are stepped down by this transformer. The transformer consists of two coils of wire; both wound on the same iron core. One coil has more turns than the other. If AC is passed through one coil, it induces moving lines of magnetic force. This in turn induces an electric current in the other coil.
If coil  A has half as many turns as coil B, then the voltage can be reduced. At the same time the current can be increased.
The current supply from an electric generator is stepped down by transformers from hundred of thousands of volts 220 volts for domestic use.
Houses are wired with electric circuits. Electricity coming into the houses passes through a meter, which measures the amount of electricity used, so that the suppliers can charge for it. The current also passes through a fuse box. A fuse protects electric appliances from overloading. If greater power of electric current is applied, a wire in the fuse gets hot and melts, so breaking the circuit and acting as a switch.

To transmit the electricity current into houses, the high voltage should be…
A.      reduced
B.      generated
C.      increased
D.      regulated

A.      reduce high voltages
B.      turn an electricity current off and on
C.      supply electricity to our home from power plant
D.      change mechanical energy into electric energy
E.       break the circuit when too much electricity is use

A.      when too much electricity is used
B.      when the electric current passes through the meter
C.      when the electric current passes through it
D.      when high voltages is changed into lower voltages
E.       when the electric energy is distributed to houses.

A.      The electric current comes from battery is alternating current
B.      The electric meter is used to check whether there is electric current or not
C.      The electric current passes through a fuse box first and then to the electric meter
D.      The electricity transmitted from the power plant is directedly distributed to houses
E.       The electric current goes into houses through the electric meter first and than to the fuse box.

The Population Problems

Indonesia, having the worlds fifth largest population and endowed with extensive and varied natural resources, has the potential to become a great and prosperous power. But for the time being she is facing four mains problems: how to cope with her population growth, how to produce enough food, how to provide people with jobs and how to organize enough exports so that the country can pay her way in the world. Indonesia’s most valuable resource is her people. But for Indonesia, as with other developing countries, the possession of this particular kind of resource can prove to be a severe impediment to economic development. The government is endeavouring to cope with the population problem in to ways; on the one hand by encouraging people to move, either spontaneously or under to official transmigration programme from densely populated Java, Madura and Bali to the wider open spaces of the outer islands of Sumatra. Transmigration is more than a response to population growth, it also carries profound implications for balanced national development and for national security.
In its response to the population growth, however, Indonesia must continue to rely upon family planning objectives, the establishment of happy and prosperous small families and the reduction of the population growth to 1% by 1990. The country’s family planning can indeed offer valuable lessons for other parts of the world- in terms not only of result achieved but also of the democratic way in which they have been achieved. Indonesia’s family planning programme has become one of the most remarkable of all attemps to institute birth control on a mass scale. Fertility has been declining even faster than Indonesia’s own population planners had anticipated. Although the country’s population had by 1978 reached almost 142 million, the rate of increase by 1979 had been brought down to less than 2%.
One of the most heartening aspects of the programme lies in the fact that the great majority of those accepting family planning come from the rural areas. It is indeed in the largely from the inifiative taken by dedicated and imaginative officials in moving the programme out of the clinic.

The population education is expected to make a substantial contribution to the success of ___ objectives.
A.      family planning
B.      birth control
C.      transmigration
D.      development
E.       education

What made the family planing very successful in the rural area?
A.      The areas are very close to the clinic.
B.      The doctor’s dedication is very imaginative.
C.      The villagers like to join family programme.
D.      The government introduce the programme to the villagers.
E.       The implementation of family panning is out side the clinic.

A.      Indonesia is facing population problems.
B.      Transmigration is also meant for national security.
C.      Birth control is needed to minimize the population growth.
D.      Indonesia has made much progress in the family planning.
E.       Family planning is closely related to the poor family.

Paragraph three tells about ___ .

In early societies money was unknown and man relied on a simple system of exchange. Perhaps a good hunter had more animal skins than he could use. his neighbor, a good fisherman, might have too many fish but needed furs to protect his children from the cold. Both soon realized that their problems could be easily solved by exchanging what they did not need, their surplus, for what they did need.
This method of exchanging something not needed for something that is needed is called barter. The word comes from the Italian ’barattare’ and the French ’barater’, which mean” to trade”.
Barter was an important means of exchange when the needs of primitive man were mostly for clothing, food, and shelter. But the system had many difficulties.
For example, a weaver who wanted to exchange his cloth for a good catch of fish might not be able to find a fisherman who needed cloth. And a farmer with too much corn might not be able to find a hunter with too many deer. When labor and services became more specialized in growing societies, barter no longer satisfied the demands of payment. A new system of exchange had to be found.
As man developed, he turned to many different things in his search for a convenient medium of exchange, or money. One of the earliest forms of money was cattle. The richest man was the one who owned the most livestock. His cattle were called capitale, and from that Latin word we get our word ”capital” meaning ”wealth”.

Why did people in early societies exchange their things for other thing?
A.      They were unfamiliar with money.
B.      They had an oversupply of products.
C.      They did not need a system of exchange.
D.      Barter system was very simple.

B.      In growing societies, barter system made them satisfied.
C.      In early societies, people traded by exchanging their things.
D.      The richest man used barter as a new system of exchange.
E.       They did not realize that they had to find a new system of exchange.

ASEAN

The Association of South – East Asian Nations (ASEAN) is a regional alliance formed in Bangkok in 1967. It took over the non-military role of another organization, the South – East Asia Treaty Organization (SEATO) in 1975. Its members are Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and (since 1984) Brunei Darussalam. The headquarters of ASEAN are in Jakarta.
The function of ASEAN is to promote cultural, economic and political co-operation in the region. It does so by organizing cultural and sporting events, by reducing tariffs on goods traded between ASEAN members and by holding summit conferences to issue communiques on particular political problems. One example of its work which is well-known throughout the region is the ASEAN Games. The games provide an opportunity for sportsmen and women to compete with their neighbors in a way that promotes fun and regional friendship.
In the modern world many nations are allying themselves with other nations in their region. The European Union (EU) – the former such as Germany, France, Ireland and Holland. Their aim is to eventually create a large European super – state like the United States of America. The United States itself is part of a regional group (the North American Free Trade Association) that includes Canada and Mexico. There is now free trade between these countries. This means that commodities can be transported from one country to another without having to pay tariffs.
The above examples of regional groupings show that the function of ASEAN is likely to because more important in the future. It is most likely that other states such as Cambodia and Vietnam will join among the member states in future. The trend is away from individual states and more towards regional groupings. Perhaps one we will see the United States of South – East Asia (USSEA).

ELECTRIC POWER SUPLAY

The electric current supplied to your home from the power station is alternating current, or AC for short. AC reverses its direction of flow 100 times every second. It flows 50 times in one direction, say to power station; and 50 times in the other direction, say from the power station. AC is easier to generate and to transmit than DC (direct current). Another reason that AC is used for domestic power supplies is that its voltage can be changed by a device called a transformer.

Huge quantities of electrical energy are produced by a power station. All this electricity must be sent out across the country to houses, shops, and factories. To ‘push’ the electricity out over long distances, very high voltages are needed. However, when the electricity reaches its destination, low voltages are needed because high voltages are very dangerous.
High voltage are ‘step-down’ by means of a transformer, an invention of nineteenth-century English scientist Michael Faraday, who also discovered the principle of the dynamo. (The dynamo can change mechanical energy into electrical energy). The transformer consist of two coil of wire (both wound on the same iron core), one coil having more turn of wire than the other. If AC is passed through one coil, it induces moving lines of magnetic force. This in turn induces an electric current in the other coil. Suppose coil A has half as many turn as coil B, then the voltage induced in it will be half the voltage in coil B. In this way the voltage can be reduced. At the same time the current can be increased.
The power supply from the power station is stepped-down by transformers from the hundreds of thousands of volts to 220 volts for domestic use. Houses are wired with electric circuits. Electricity coming into the house passes through a meter, which measures the amount of electricity used, so that the supplier can charge for it. The current also passes through a fuse box. A fuse protect electrical appliances from over loading. If too much power is taken, a wire in the fuse gets hot and melts, so breaking the circuit and acting as a ‘switch’.

What apparatus is needed to convert the voltage in domestic power supplies of electricity?
a generator
a fuse box
a transformer
an electrical circuit
an electrical appliance

What happen to the other coil if AC is passed through one coil ?
It consists if two coils.
It has more turns of wire.
It changes mechanical energy.
It induces electric currents.
It winds on the same iron core.

The function of fuse is ___ .
to switch  on the light
to change the electricity
to reduce the high voltage
to measure the mount of electricity
to protect electrical appliances from the over loading

The two coil of wire of transformer can reduce the voltage and increase the current at the same time.
The above statements means ___ .
the quantities of electrical energy
how the transformer works
the function of generator
how the houses are wire
the danger of high voltage

The power of electricity for domestic use … .
must be over 220 volts
can change electrical energy
should be changed into 220 volts
is unnecessary to be stopped down
should be directly supplies from the power station
